People facing homelessness are not just statistics; they are individuals with stories, aspirations, and dreams to share. By engaging with and listening to these stories, we can take the necessary steps to destigmatize homelessness.
Andrew and Amanda have been residents of the Newcastle supportive housing site for nearly three months. During this brief period, they have made significant strides in rebuilding their lives away from homelessness and reintegrating into the community. Before becoming homeless, Amanda led a normal life with a job, a vehicle, and a stable living situation. However, after leaving an abusive relationship, Amanda found herself without support systems and eventually became homeless, along with her two dogs.
Upon her tribulating circumstances, Amanda met Andrew, who has been struggling with the housing crisis for 12 years. Despite facing such hardships, Andrew’s affirmation is grounded in the belief that everything happens for a reason, conveying “I got dreams and aspirations… Something through me telling my story could be healing. I mean, that’s what I believe I’m here for.”
Andrew emphasizes the significance of choice, highlighting its power to positively or negatively impact one’s life. No one should have to choose between their emotional and physical wellbeing or a safe refuge to sleep, but this is regrettably the case for many individuals who end up homeless. In line with this, Amanda asserts “I didn’t choose to be homeless. No one chooses to be homeless.” Thus, there exists an illusion of choice wherein outsiders may perceive homelessness as a straightforward choice. However, the events leading an individual to homelessness are much more nuanced and complex than commonly understood.
Through the exchange of Amanda and Andrew’s stories, a clear theme of gratitude arose. Despite facing the devastating impacts of homelessness, such as starvation and lack of safety, Andrew and Amanda maintain gratitude for the opportunity provided by ICCS to begin rebuilding their lives. They are working towards a future of normalcy, appreciating the small joys along the way and keeping their spirits high.
One’s outlook and perception of self are greatly altered through experiencing the impacts of homelessness; however, it can also provide an altered perspective of the world around us. In line with the couple’s newfound gratitude, Amanda emphasizes that despite the adversity, this experience has provided her “Compassion and a gained respect for those living on the streets.” Andrew highlights the resources they have been given through Newcastle, emphasizing that he now feels he is able to begin utilizing these tools, “Telling my story and that’s when the healing begins.”
Amanda and Andrew’s resilience is a testament to their character and their capacity to navigate through adversity with hope and courage, aiming for brighter outcomes.
“You’re never alone, find hope in the promise of tomorrow.” – Amanda
