What are you thankful for?
As autumn days move forward, we at ICCS begin to think about Thanksgiving, to take a moment to pause and remember the blessings of home, family and well-being – and to be grateful.
Despite the challenges so many have faced during this unusual year, we have so much to the thankful for! Perhaps even more than in other years, the on-going realities of COVID have led many of us to reassess who we are in relation to our community and recognise how we are all connected in many more ways than we might once have thought.
Yet for some in our community, this season is not such a thankful time. Instead, it brings memories of pain, loneliness and isolation that may feel overwhelming. It can even be a moment of fear, when days get cold, and shelter is scarce.
Some of you may remember Island Crisis Care Society’s annual Thanksgiving campaign – known as BlueBank. In the past we circulated small “banks”, encouraging people to put spare dollars into a little blue house, as they thought about what they were grateful for and remembered those in our city who do not have a safe space to call home.
The BlueBank campaign gives us all have the chance to be thankful in a tangible way and to reach out a hand of support to others in our community for whom the season of thankfulness may be bleak, turning our Thankfulness into Action.
