Volunteer Spotlight – David

David volunteer

Before volunteering with Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS), David knew very little about the organization. He was aware of the new building in Parksville that provided housing for those in need, but it wasn’t until his initial training with ICCS that he fully realized the desperate necessity of such a facility.

David has a long history of volunteer work, having previously dedicated his time to organizations such as Big Brothers and the Salvation Army Food Bank. He saw volunteering at Orca Place as another meaningful opportunity to give back to the community.

When he first walked into Orca Place, David was unsure of what to expect. He quickly recognized that it was a safe and supportive environment for individuals facing challenges often beyond their control. The warm welcome from the staff, especially Alexis (ICCS’ Lifeskills Coordinator) at the front entrance, immediately put him at ease. He was deeply impressed by the sense of belonging that Orca Place fostered for both residents and volunteers alike.

One of the most unforgettable aspects of David’s volunteering experience has been the gratitude and warmth shown by the residents. Witnessing how a secure and stable home can restore a sense of worth to those who have spent time on the streets left a lasting impact on him.

Through his time at Orca Place, David has gained a profound understanding of the critical need for supportive housing in the community. He admires how ICCS staff treat residents with dignity and respect, acknowledging them as valuable individuals who deserve compassion and support.

For David, the most rewarding part of volunteering with ICCS has been seeing firsthand the positive impact of a safe home and supportive community. He encourages anyone considering volunteering to take the leap, as he has found it to be an incredibly fulfilling experience.

Reflecting on his journey, David acknowledges that before volunteering, he had little awareness of ICCS and its vital role in the community. Now, he recognizes the organization’s broader impact—not only in providing housing but also in connecting residents with mental health services and other essential community programs. He firmly believes that ICCS is making a significant difference, creating a stronger and more compassionate community for everyone.
