Deborah is a thoughtful and passionate volunteer who brings curiosity, compassion, and a deep desire to make a difference to her work with Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS). Her journey with ICCS began after reading stories on the website about other volunteers’ contributions, especially young women like herself who were already making an impact. Inspired by their efforts, she knew she wanted to be part of something that mattered.
Deborah’s first volunteer experience was at Safe Harbour House on Victoria Road. From the moment she walked in, she was warmly welcomed by both staff and clients. She helped with cleaning and watering the garden, and quickly found herself engaged in meaningful moments, whether it was creating art or sharing conversations. “It was a lovely experience,” she recalls with a smile.
One moment that stands out for Deborah is a deep and thoughtful discussion she had with a client about psychology, her major at university and a topic close to her heart. Their conversation touched on the incredible capabilities of the human mind, the uniqueness of individual behavior, and even the history of the opioid crisis in British Columbia. “It was an unforgettable experience,” she says, reflecting on the connection they shared through mutual curiosity and understanding.
Volunteering has had a powerful impact on Deborah’s life. It’s shifted her perspective and nurtured qualities like empathy and patience. She’s learned to value small moments and to see how even simple acts like helping with lunch or sharing a kind word—can have a profound effect. “I used to think big gestures were what made a difference,” she explains, “but now I see how powerful small, consistent acts of support can be.”
For Deborah, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the deep sense of purpose that comes from helping others and contributing to something greater. She encourages anyone considering volunteering with ICCS to take the leap: “It’s a wonderful and rewarding experience. If you’re looking for a way to impact people’s lives, this is the best way to do it.”
What sets ICCS apart for Deborah is the sense of genuine care and community. “It never feels like just a service—it feels like a family,” she shares. “They don’t just help people get by; they help them build a future with dignity and confidence.”
Through her time, her presence, and her heart, Deborah is making a meaningful difference—and reminding all of us that change often begins with simply showing up and being kind.
