Volunteer Spotlight – Elaine

Elaine’s journey with Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS) began with a desire to serve. As part of the Nazarene Church Ladies Outreach, she and her group were looking for ways to connect with and support women in the community. When they learned about Samaritan Place, she took the initiative to research ICCS online, and soon after, the group completed the necessary steps to become volunteers. Over time, as members of the group moved away or faced health challenges, their numbers dwindled from ten to one—but Elaine remained, committed to the work and the people she had come to know.

Her dedication to ICCS has led her to serve in various capacities, each experience deepening her appreciation for the organization’s impact. One of her most cherished memories is volunteering at the Harvest Tea, an event that brought warmth and joy to the guests. Seeing their happiness was a powerful reminder of why she continues to give her time.

The relationships Elaine has built with the women at Samaritan Place are what make volunteering truly special for her. She finds fulfillment in their appreciation and the sense of connection that forms through simple acts of kindness. Through her time with ICCS, she has also gained a new perspective on the organization’s extensive role in the community—not just in housing, but also in fundraising and outreach efforts.

Elaine believes that volunteering is a two-way street. While she gives her time and energy, she also receives countless blessings in return. She encourages anyone considering volunteering with ICCS to take the leap, knowing that there are many different ways to get involved. The staff and residents appreciate every contribution, no matter how small.

With over 14 programs operating with the support of volunteers, we provide a variety of different volunteer opportunities in both Nanaimo and Parksville, including positions supporting clients directly, supporting staff and other volunteers, but also providing support within our programs.
