Volunteer Spotlight – Katie

Katie volunteer

Katie didn’t know a thing about Island Crisis Care Society before she started volunteering, she simply stumbled upon us during an online search. But from that first click, something sparked. With a bit of free time on her hands and a heart for community, Katie decided to dive in and lend a hand.

“I wanted to volunteer for a couple of reasons,” she says. “I figured, why not use my time to help out locally? Plus, as a social work student, I knew the experience would be valuable if I decide to continue my studies. And of course, I hoped to meet some like-minded people along the way.”

Her very first day was at the downtown drop-in center, where she was welcomed with open arms by the team and community. “It was such a calm, cozy day – people were relaxing, sipping coffee, just enjoying the space. The staff were all so kind and made me feel right at home.”

Though she’s still new to the ICCS family, Katie is already feeling the impact. “Volunteering has been a really healthy distraction. It keeps me busy in the best way, and I’ve started to feel more connected to my community.”

So what would she say to someone on the fence about volunteering with ICCS? “Go for it! With so many different programs, you’re bound to find something that clicks. And the volunteer coordinator? Super friendly, super flexible, it’s easy to find a schedule that works for you.”

Katie, we’re so thrilled you found us, your warmth, curiosity, and community spirit are already making waves.

With over 14 programs operating with the support of volunteers, we provide a variety of different volunteer opportunities in both Nanaimo and Parksville, including positions supporting clients directly, supporting staff and other volunteers, but also providing support within our programs.
