Volunteer Spotlight – Madison

At Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS), our volunteers are the heart of our mission, bringing compassion and care to those who need it most. We are thrilled to highlight Madison Dougan, whose dedication and kindness have made a lasting impact on the lives of many.

A Journey of Compassion

Before joining ICCS, Madison knew very little about the organization. A brief introduction from our Lifeskills Coordinator Alexis sparked her interest, and soon she found herself stepping into a role that would profoundly change her perspective on community care.

Madison was initially approached to provide interventional hand and foot care to residents—a skill she had trained for and was eager to put to good use. She saw this as a chance to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, particularly in addressing a fundamental yet often overlooked aspect of personal health.

First Impressions & Lasting Impact

Her first day volunteering at Orca Place in Parksville was both exciting and nerve-wracking. The logistics of setting up and meeting residents were daunting, but the gratitude and warmth she encountered reassured her that her work was truly needed.

One experience that will stay with her forever was meeting a resident struggling with severe foot issues. His toenails had curled under, causing immense discomfort and limiting his mobility. Within half an hour, Madison was able to provide the care he desperately needed, allowing him to walk freely and even wear proper shoes for the first time in months. His heartfelt gratitude reaffirmed the profound impact of her work.

The Joy of Giving Back

For Madison, volunteering has been a deeply fulfilling journey. Whether through listening to a resident’s story, sharing a common interest, or providing essential care, every moment spent at ICCS fills her with pride and joy. Knowing that her presence is valued, especially when residents eagerly wait to share milestones or simple joys like a pet’s latest antics, makes the experience all the more rewarding.

She encourages anyone considering volunteering to take the leap. While she was initially apprehensive, she now sees it as one of the most enriching experiences of her life. The kindness and sense of purpose she has encountered have taught her the true meaning of happiness.

Why ICCS?

Madison believes ICCS plays a crucial role in fostering progress and empowerment within the community. The organization not only provides essential support but also nurtures personal growth, helping individuals rediscover passions and build new skills.

A key reason she feels so connected to ICCS is her close friendship with Alexis, whose unwavering dedication to the cause has been a constant source of inspiration. Working

alongside someone who genuinely cares about every person they help has only deepened Madison’s commitment to the mission.

A Balancing Act

Despite working two jobs, Madison ensures she takes one day off each month to visit three ICCS sites. She cherishes the balance between her analytical full-time work and the hands-on, personal connections she forms through volunteering. For her, this blend of structure and compassion creates a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Madison’s story is a testament to the power of kindness and the impact one person can have. We are incredibly grateful for her dedication and the difference she makes in our community. Thank you, Madison, for all that you do!
