Melanie is a compassionate presence within the chaplaincy program at Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS), bringing warmth, listening, and a quiet strength to the residents she connects with. Her journey into volunteering began with a familiar face — her pastor, who sits on the ICCS board. Knowing her background and heart for service, he suggested she explore a chaplaincy role at one of the housing facilities. That spark led to a tour of Newcastle Place and the beginning of something meaningful.
Before joining ICCS, Melanie was already familiar with the organization’s housing programs and was a regular at the community bakery, admiring not just the delicious offerings, but also the training and hospitality that fueled it. Still, stepping into a chaplaincy role was a new chapter. After completing her training, Melanie was welcomed by supportive staff who helped her set up in the activity room with coffee, treats, and soft background music. She brought along a few conversation pieces, small items meant to spark curiosity, and, with each visit, she carefully jotted down notes to remember names and build relationships.
One of the most memorable aspects of volunteering for Melanie is the privilege of hearing people’s stories, reflections on their life journeys, their struggles, and their joys. She recalls how special it is to celebrate milestones with clients at events hosted by staff, or to be entrusted with the sacred task of holding a memorial. These moments are reminders of the deep human connections at the heart of her role.
For Melanie, ICCS is more than a service provider. It’s a place where tangible needs like shelter and food are met, but so are deeper needs for dignity, hope, and human connection.
Through her presence, listening ear, and open heart, Melanie helps make ICCS a place of compassion and transformation, not just for the people she serves, but for everyone who has the chance to work alongside her.
