Nancy came to volunteering with little prior knowledge of ICCS, but with a deep sense of compassion and concern for unhoused individuals in her community. Feeling unsure of how to help on her own, she was inspired to get involved so she could take meaningful action and be part of a solution.
Her first experience volunteering at David’s Place left a lasting impression. Spending time with residents, going for a walk and getting to know them, helped build genuine connection and showed her the power of simple, human interaction.
One of Nancy’s most memorable experiences was volunteering at the Coldest Night of the Year event, where she was moved by the incredible turnout from families, community groups, and individuals all united by a shared desire to make a difference. The sense of collective care and positivity in the room stayed with her.
Volunteering has also been deeply personal for Nancy. Having supported a family member through a period of homelessness, she brings both lived experience and empathy to her role, seeing her volunteer work as a way of giving back and supporting others on a similar journey.
For Nancy, the most rewarding part of volunteering is taking the time to listen, offering space for people to share their stories and feel heard. She encourages anyone considering volunteering to “go for it,” emphasizing that ICCS creates meaningful opportunities to be part of real, community-based change.
Nancy believes ICCS plays a vital role in strengthening the community by focusing on those most in need and working at the grassroots level to support housing, healing, and stability. For her, the organization stands out because its mission aligns so closely with her own values and lived experience.
Thank you, Nancy, for your compassion, your presence, and the difference you make in our community.
