The first time Noreen walked into an Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS) facility, she wasn’t sure what to expect. It was 2015, and she had just completed her volunteer training course. She had read the brochures and listened to the presentations, but nothing quite prepared her for the experience of being there in person. Seeing the spaces where people rebuilt their lives, meeting the dedicated staff, and understanding the urgent need in the community struck a deep chord within her. At that moment, she knew she wanted to be a part of this work in whatever way she could.
Noreen’s journey with ICCS truly began when she became a team captain for the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk. The event took her through parts of the community she might never have visited otherwise, opening her eyes to the struggles that so many people faced daily. What truly inspired her, however, was witnessing how staff and volunteers worked together. She realized that by assisting with smaller tasks—things that didn’t require certification or specialized training—she could free up staff to focus on the crucial work only they could do. It was a humbling realization that solidified her commitment.
One of Noreen’s first hands-on experiences as a volunteer was cleaning carpets at the office on Princess Royal Avenue before the staff moved in. Armed with a steam cleaner borrowed from Violet and plenty of elbow grease, she tackled room after room. It wasn’t glamorous work, but knowing that her efforts helped redirect funds toward more urgent needs made it worthwhile.
Since then, she had taken part in many different volunteer activities, but one experience in particular stood out. In December 2024, she participated in a Cook & Connect activity at David’s Place. Together with the residents, she helped prepare a meal of pumpkin soup and garlic toast. Everyone pitched in—chopping, stirring, and sharing stories as the delicious aroma filled the kitchen. When they finally sat down to eat, there was a deep sense of warmth—not just from the soup, but from the fellowship around the table. It was a moment of gratitude and connection that she would never forget.
Volunteering with ICCS changed Noreen in ways she never expected. It pushed her outside of her own thoughts and into the reality of others’ experiences. As a retiree, she now had the time to give freely, and she cherished the opportunity to offer her energy and care to those who needed it. She had come to believe more deeply than ever that when one gives in Jesus’ name, they always receive just as much—if not more—than they give. There was a special kind of joy in being part of something that brought people hope.
To anyone considering volunteering, Noreen confidently assured that ICCS would support them every step of the way. The training was excellent, the hours were flexible, and there were so many different ways to get involved. It might take someone slightly out of their comfort zone, but always in a way that allowed them to grow while helping others.
Through her time with ICCS, Noreen learned just how difficult the challenges were for people facing homelessness, food insecurity, and addiction. But she also learned that no one in the community had to feel alone—because organizations like ICCS existed to offer hope, shelter, and a path forward.
Among the many nonprofits doing this essential work, ICCS stood out to her because of its exceptional organization and the deep expertise of its staff. She felt honored to be part of a team that truly made a difference.
Looking back, she couldn’t imagine her life without volunteering. The people she met, the experiences she had, and the lessons she learned had all shaped her in ways she never expected. For anyone thinking about getting involved, she encouraged them to take that first step. They wouldn’t regret it.
